About Floor Clocks

July 14, 2010

If you are going to buy a grandfather clock, you could ask yourself three questions: what material should the clock be made of, do I prefer a specific designer, brand or manufacturer and what fits best to me or my home/office?

Material can be wood, but also stone, glass, metal and even plastic is used for the clock’s case by some brands.

Howard Miller, Madison, and Wesley are popular longcase clock brands. The longest of them is the Madison which is more than 6 feet high. It’s wood is linden for the body and cherry is used to finish the clock. It has a wind key for the operation and you have to wound it once every month. The beautiful chimes of these grandfather clocks can be heard every hour and every half hour.

Wesley uses oakwood to finish the clocks and is styled antique. It also has a 31 day key wind movement. This longcase clock can be considered as the perfect gift if you are looking for an antique style tall case clock.

The Franklin clock has a more neutral style and is therefore suitable for many kinds of decor in residential homes or offices. It’s made of real cherry wood and will last for many generations. The chime can be heard every half hour. The pendulum can be adjusted for accurate timekeeping.

In general, when we talk about a traditional floor clock, we mean to say that it has some sort of mechanical powering and winding mechanism. This can be a pendulum, cable or chains or a combination of three or two of them. When we talk about contemporary clocks, it means that they are powered by A A batteries or electricity. Both systems are reliable.
